Holes and digging holes

We have been reading Holes by Louis Sachar. In the story, Stanley had to dig a 5 foot by 5 foot hole.
We wondered how big this was.

The first thing we did was try to figure out how is one foot in centimeters. In groups, we discussed how much is a meter (100 centimeters) and took pictures that were a meter tall.

We estimated that 5 foot is around 1.5 meters.

Room 12 then tried to dig this hole in the sandpit.










After 30 minutes of digging, we realised that it was a really, really, really, really, really big hole.
